Entrepreneur Spotlight: Morgan Marie Beauty

morgan_marie-2We recently got our hair and makeup done for our holiday lookbook photo shoot (see the behind the scenes shots on instagram!). The lovely ladies behind Morgan Marie Beauty did our makeup looks and we were so inspired by their talent and incredible story, we had to get to know them a bit better. Here is what we found out about these fabulous founders –a11a93_cf0670903c084645c3f41f3c4b387bca.jpg_srz_385_245_75_22_0.50_1.20_0.00_jpg_srz
T+J: Morgan Marie started in 2012 – what has lead to the success of your brand and where do you see yourself headed?

MMB: We think our key to success is that we are genuinely very passionate about our clients and what we do! We truly feel so lucky to have the opportunity to inspire confidence in women through cosmetics. In the next few years, we have plans to fully expand our cosmetic line and eventually open our first location.

T+J: What were you doing before you started Morgan Marie Beauty?  What made you decide to start it?

MMB: Marie and I were actually working together at a Nordstrom. She was the business manager for Chanel and I was the business manager for NARS. Morgan Marie Beauty actually happened very organically! Neither one of us ever thought that we would start a cosmetics company but one thing lead to another and we knew it was the best choice for us and our clients!

T+J:  What advice would you give to someone just starting their business or what is the best advice you received?

MMB: If you can dream it, you can do it! With a lot of hard work and determination, anything can happen!

T+J:  What’s your best beauty tip for women who are short on time in the mornings?

MMB: The best way to quickly enhance your features is to perfect your skin, throw on a touch of mascara and a lipstick or gloss!  We love this pretty hot pink lipstick called Madonna shown  below.

T+J: How do people book your time for makeup application? And where can we purchase your cosmetics?

MMB: People can book appointments on our website and all our products are sold online at

Special thank you to Morgan & Marie! See more of their beautiful work below!

Introducing Carolina Alvo, the Solution to the Petite Dilemma

Since starting t+j Designs, we’re all about supporting small businesses, especially ones run by women.  We love connecting and networking with other women who are sharing in the same experiences in running our own businesses. So when we heard about Carolina Alvo and her newly launched petite fashion line, we were pretty excited since we can personally relate to the struggles of finding clothes that fit.

Not only are the clothes designed by a petite woman with petite women in mind, you can also customize inseams, hems, and sleeve lengths, which is what really makes her label special. For anyone 5’4” or under, getting pants hemmed and blazer sleeves shortened really adds up in terms of cost and time.

Carolina Alvo’s designs are very classic and simple that offer sophisticated versatility. You can see the line here. However it isn’t available for purchase yet. Alvo is raising the funds to produce her designs via Kickstarter here. You can help support the project and be one of the first to purchase the dress here!

the perfect petite dressWe think this is an incredible project and line, especially as petite women ourselves. Another feel-good aspect of the company? They donate 1% of their profits to Girl Rising, a campaign that helps girls around the world get to and stay in school.

What are some problems you’ve had shopping as a petite woman?

Small Business Love: For Little Girls

I’m a big fan of supporting small businesses.  I know how much work it goes into running a business and feel like there is a lot more love and thought put into each order which is wonderful.  While I love to shop Baby Gap as much as the next mom, I love even more to browse and shop for things for my daughter through small business and women owned shops. I love finding new-to-me shops and often get recommendations from friends so wanted to share a few favorites with you.  I have to warn you though, if you have a little girl, you may not be able to resist buying from them!

1. Mend by Ruby Grace – I really wanted a doll for my daughter but could not find any that fit the description of what I was looking for.  I looked in several toy stores and specialty toy shops and thought that it just didn’t exist until I stumbled upon this shop on Etsy.  I just could not believe how gorgeous these dolls were!  She custom makes them with all sorts of options to choose from and even down to the style of clothing that the doll will wear!  I ordered mine with two little dachshund “buddies” and she even made a little bag for the doll to carry her doggies in! It’s also a nice big size which I love so that my daughter can hold it in her arms and give it lots of hugs 🙂

Here’s our doll with her two doggie friends

2. Joyfolie –  I know shoes for babies that aren’t walking yet aren’t the most practical but I just can not resist.  These Joyfolie shoes are not only beautiful but they are so well made.  I just ordered these for Layla to wear on her first birthday photo shoot!  Just a note, Gilt often has Joyfolie on their website, do NOT order from them as they price higher than Joyfolie themselves!  I ordered a pair of shoes only to find that Joyfolie charges less on their own website and Gilt refused to price match.  If it hadn’t been for Gilt I wouldn’t have found this brand but nonetheless I’m only shopping from the Joyfolie website from now on!
3. Four Jays Bows – I was introduced to her shop when I won an instagram giveaway and was impressed with the quality of her bows.  I have ordered several more times after and each time I’ve been extremely happy with her bows.  They all look so great on my baby girl and we get lots of compliments on them when she wears them out!  Our favorite is this star headband.
4. Bitsy Blossom – these shoes are to die for they are so cute!  I only have the heart pair from them but the quality is amazing and they are so cute on. Their shop is currently closed but they do have a ton of great styles that I will be ordering later on when they reopen.

Mommy and me golden shoes 🙂

5. The Little Spoons – I just discovered this shop so haven’t ordered ordered anything yet but love the cute little dresses, tops and shorties that she makes!

What are some of your favorite small businesses?  I would love to know!
